After Sql Server SP2, Excel installed on the AS server can access the OLAP
data, but computers in the local network cant (while they can still access
regular databases on the same server).

One more thing,
Did you installed service pack 2 for SQL Server?
Excel 2007 is required sp2 to use some feature.

I tried that (I'm using Excel 2007) and unless I need to download some
additional drivers for Excel 2007, I dont know what I'm doing wrong - he gets
the sql server address, username and password (which work when i use connect
to sql server, but not when connecting to as) and then reports no server, and
on that server I regularly browse my cube within visual studio

to connect excel to your OLAP Server:
1. make sure you have installed the OLAP drivers (the drivers for AS2000 are
installed with Excel 2003, for SSAS 2005 download and install the client
driver from the feature page)
2. open excel and add a pivottable (excel 2003) and connect this pivottable
to an external datasource and select the OLAP tab instead of the database
tab
3. create a new connection to your OLAP server and enjoy!
in Excel 2007 the interface is different but the process is near the same
1. go in the data tab
2. click "from other sources" and select "From analysis services"
3. follow the wizard to connect excel to your cube
you can search on the web to find Excel plugins, applications or controls
which can be connected to a cube.

sorry for newbie question, i'm a beginner in olap.
after reading a manual, i created a data warehouse db, succesfully created
a
cube in analysis services, and i can impress everyone with cube browser in
the ide (a visual studio view of cube in the project - the one where i
just
drag dimensions, measures, and maybe filters.
is there any way i can expose this kind of control to the user, via a some
.net control or something like excel, so users can make their own
reports -
drag dimensions and measuers they need, and possibly filters.
i tried connecting excel to olap server and it didnt work (i can connect
to
sql server database from excel with ip address and db name, but the same
doesnt work with analysis services)
thanx in advance :)
