Since you are just getting started, I would suggest three resources:
1) BOL has a good discussion of partitioning
2) SQL Server 2000 Resource Kit (if you can't get it from your local
bookstore, then try and locate someone in your organization which has a
TechNet subscription. The SQL RK is one of the resource kits that TechNet
re-distributes. The SQL RK has an entire chapter on AS partitioning.
3) The AS Performance Guide
