Re: How to enable Analysis Services with IIS on Win 2K

Thank you Dave,
"For the outside" means outside of my LAN or through the Internet.
The OLAP cube that I am trying to make available to the Internet users is
inside the Firewall - in my case small Linksys Cable/DSN router, port 80 is
open only and it is pointing to the Web server. There are two servers in this
scenario. The first one has IIS 5.0 (most recent SP applied, but I can't
chack which one now) and SQL 2K Analysis Server Enterprise Edition with SP3a
(let's call this one MY_IIS). The second server is database server with SQL
2K Standard Edition and SP3a (and let's call that one MY_SQL). It is also PDC.
In meanwhile I found "How to Connect to Analysis Services over the Internet"
webcast and tried to implement it. Here is what has been done so far:
- Msolap.asp copied to wwwroot directory on MY_IIS
- Msmdpump.dll is correctly registered on MY_IIS server
- Confirmed that Msolap.asp is installed correctly by typing
HTTP://MY_IIS/Msolap.asp in address bar - no error message, just plain blank
pag (as it should be)
- Allow Anonimus access on MY_IIS, default account is used
(IUSR_<MachineName>)
- Installed PivotTable Services, version 8.0 on the client machine
- Changed the connection string to have data source=HTTP://MY_IIS
At this point I have different results:
- If I use a server name (data source=HTTP://MY_IIS) all works fine
internaly (inside the firewall, on the LAN) and I still have "Unable to
connect to the Analysis server. The server 'MY_IIS' was not found" on a
client machine, connected through the Internet, located outside the firewall.
- If I use full URLin the connection string (data
source=HTTP://www.mydomain.com) the client machoine will eventually time out,
but most likelly IE is frozen and I should shut it down. The internal client
machine can't open it either.
I also tried to reduce a cube size to the bare minimum (fact table with
about 100 records and only 2 dimension tables with 5 records each). but it
still times out.
I hope that I covered everything relevant now.
Thank you, regards, Marin
