analysis services excel add-in and pivot tables connection issue

I have analysis services on a server. The server is running Win2003 and
anlaysis services has SP4 (2000, not 2005!).
I have 2 client machines...
neither can connect to the analysis server by either pivot tables or the MS
excel add-in.
what is REALLY strange is that YESTERDAY, my machine connected by both pivot
tables AND the add-in with no problems. (the 2nd machine would not connect,
logged in as the same person). Since then, I installed some additional SQL
and Analysis services products on my machine. Now: I have very strange
behavoir...
If I go to cubeAnalysis Manage connection when I type in the server name, I
get OLAP server error on connection... OLAP Server error: Unspecified Error.
I get the same message if I attempt to use the http connection.

within pivot tables...
I go to external data, get data, and pick a new data source...
If I choose olap services for 8.0, NOTHING happens when I hit connect.
If I choose opal services (not for 8.0), I get to choose the server, and it
brings up the real list of databases, but then there are no cubes.
(Yesterday when this WAS working, I had to use the 8.0 to access the cubes).

If I attempt to use the existing data source that worked yesterday...
i get that initialization of the data source failed....

I did change my username password yesterday.
I have a client machine with XP running office 2003.

I've installed SP4 for analysis services (in case there was some issue with
not having that on my client, but having another verision of analysis
services on this machine).

I've re-installed the MS Excel Add-In quite a few times.

It doesn't make ANY sense. Any help would be GREAT.
