MSDE connection working with IP address but not instance name

I can't access to my MSDE instance from external clients if I select the
Instance name.
"this server does not exist or access is restricted"

If I use the IP adress instead everything is OK. (I always use sa account /
sql server authentication).

- Both MSDE server and clients are on XP SP2.
- I set an exclusion on XP firewall for TCP 1433 port on the MSDE server.
- I have checked that the named pipes are enabled using SVRNETCN.exe

=> can anyody find an issue about that problem.
