Okay, solved the problem -- not me, but the sql guru here -- he finally
slapped his head.

The problem was that we had to run the svrnetcn.exe utility and make sure
that Named Pipes and TCP/IP were enabled. Nothing was enabled...go figure.

Sorry to waste anyone's time.
