Interesting comment, Dan. I have the same problem except the service manager cannot find the local instance at all even when I type it in the combo box. See my second post for topic "Installed MSDE Rel A does not appear to work".

Not displaying the instance name may seem normal, but there must be a catch to it. I installed the instance with DisableNetworkProtocols=0 to enable network access from a peer computer. I wonder if the the Service Manager can't get thru to the SQL Server via the TCP/IP (they still communicate by TCP/IP if they are both on the one system).
