Here is one article I remember reading very recently .. by a leading author Mike Gunderloy which states something like:
"We recommend using Windows Authentication mode when possible. However, Mixed mode is required when working with SQL Server 7.0 (or earlier). SQL Server Authentication (Mixed) is provided for backward compatibility with earlier versions of SQL Server. "
