Upgrading from MSDE to SQL Server is deceptively simple: Run the SQL Server
installation. You will be asked if you want to upgrade your existing
instance or install a new one. Choose to upgrade. Afterwards re-install
SP3a. None of your application databases or security settings will be
changed.

If you are needing to migrate from MSDE to SQL Server (move the database
from one platform to another) then you will need to provide instructions for
detaching and re-attaching your database and setting up the logins and
security settings on the new system.

MSDE will get installed on the client's machine along with the setup
program. I am trying to find detailed article and upgrade path from MSDE To
SQL Server 2000 for my clients who might request it. I have searched on web
and on microsoft's website but cannot find a comprehensive article which
anyone can follow to upgrade my named MSDE instance to full blown SQL
Server.
