MSDE setup stops responding in setupre.exe

The installation of MSDE 2000 stops responding when launching
sqlredis.exe. It seems that sqlredis.exe launchs setupre.exe and hangs
there. We don't have f... idea of what's going on. i've seen a lot of
people with similar problems on the web but no solutions.
Some help would be appreciated.

the OS is windows 200 server but we got the same behavior in other
machine.
