I had a feeling it could be something like that.

I am wondering if I really need to keep the old file (I maintain about
4G of patches, updates, and utilities already).

Isn't it simpler to uninstall any older versions and install this latest
one that includes SP3a? Are there any 'settings' or other data that
should be preserved from older installations?
