Cannot backup WMSDE through pipe

Hello all,

I have a backup application that has the option (the most used one) to backup SQL databases through pipe.
This works fine with all MSDE 2000 versions I tried (SP3, SP3a, ReleaseA) except the instance installed for SharePoint services on SBS 2003.
On the same SBS 2003 the SBSMonitoring instance is fine too.
The errors I keep getting are like:
"Cannot open backup device '\\.\pipe\msdb.dmp'. Device error or device
off-line. See the SQL Server error log for more details. BACKUP
DATABASE is terminating abnormally." on SHAREPOINT instance's
databases. Initially I thought that it might be because the network
protocols where not enabled - even if the SBSMONITORING does not have
any problem, since my backup application is on the local computer -
but enabling them did not make any difference. Backing up those
databases to disk device is OK though. Do you have any idea what is
wrong with the pipe?
I have performed some other tests directly from osql with the same
result ("Cannot open database device...":
1. backup database model to pipe='\\.\pipe\model.12' with init
   go
2. sp_addumpdevice 'pipe', 'modelpipe', '\\.\pipe\model.12'
   go
backup database model to modelpipe with init
   go

Now, the syntax for backup database does not contain anymore PIPE in
the options for devices ( it is {DISK | TAPE} ) but the description
still has references to named pipes. Plus, the sp_addumpdevice has
options for pipe. And, again, this works on the SBSMONITORING
instance.

One other thing: on a Win2K computer I installed the instance 16 from
the CD with SP3a and everything was OK. I also downloaded the ReleaseA, installed it
and the backup was OK again.
When I installed the instance
16 from the SBS 2003 CD (I copied the sqlrun16.msi and sqlrun.cab from
SBS2003 and used the setup.exe from the SP3a CD) I got the same errors

This looks like a bug in that instance 16 included in the SBS 2003
doesn't it?.

2. SBS used to come with full SQL Server. This comes with
"rebuildm.exe" tool to do a quick rebuild of master database. In a
simple recovery scenario, once the master db is OK, you can restore
your most recent backup of your databases and you are up and running.
The problem is that SBS 2003 does not come with this rebuildm;
therefore if I have database corruptions, how can I rebuild the master
- without reinstalling all the monitoring, etc -, in order to be able
to start the MSDE service and restore the databases from my backups? I
found the MSDE files on SBS2003 installation CDs and I can extract the
original system databases but what should I do next? If I just copy
them to the current location, initially MSDE complained that it cannot
find the model db in ..\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\data. I assume that
this is the default path and, during installation, the master database
is updated. I did not care too much, since I only want to start the
service, therefore I copied the model and msdb databases to that
location. Now the service starts, but I am not able to log in from
osql; it fails to authenticate the domain admin I was using (which is
perfectly valid) !!! I tried both "osql -S computername\sbsmonitoring
-E" and "osql -S computername\sbsmonitoring -U administrator"

Any help would be appreciated
Dan Tudor
