I agree that the data conversion issue should not apply to your scenario, it looks like we are not taking into account the data size when asking Sql Server to do the conversion. I would like to encourage you to file a bug on this for tracking purposes (I have opened a bug internally but filing a bug will enable you to get feedback as the bug gets fixed). At this time this bug will not make it into the v1.1 release, sorry.
