    First of all, why are you storing dates as a character string? This will
    totally destroy any ability for you to do things like range searches or date
    arithmetic without taking extremely painful steps. Second, display is a
    client issue. You know that the invalid dates are '01/01/1900', so program
    your app not to display those dates.
