Re: How to connect to a remote server from a local studio manager

My Linksys RVS4000 (the router that's used to connect my network to the ADSL network modem) is designed to host VPN connections. This can also be done with a dedicated ISA server, but that's not really necessary now that the routers have gotten so smart. Once you have this router in place, you can easily use any (modern) Windows client to establish a VPN connection to the network. Users would authenticate via the network's Domain controller and be permitted access to the net given the constraints of their domain account. This data is encrypted and permits your client applications to open connections as if they were on the local area network. And no, I don't use the Linksys VPN client software.

Thank You Bill, Thank you Mark,

I think that what I'm looking to do is something that has been suggested by
Bill. That is, I'd like to see my remote server as part of my Local Network
and then, so I think, I'll be able to see it listed as an option of the
'Server Name' drop down list on MSSQL Server Management Studio (connect to
server widow).

If so, i need to set up a VPN connection to Server2003. I must say that I
have never set up such a connection and I'd like to have more information
regarding this topic.

Thank you both for your help.

David

Ah, I wouldn't use straight TCP/IP--it's too dangerous and not particularly
reliable. I would setup a VPN connection to protect the data and add a
degree of stability to the connection. With a VPN connection the external
server(s) should be visible to each other and to the tools you'll use to
access them.
