If they are named instances then port 1433 will not be used. They will each get their own port or you can assign a specific one. That is a good start if you can ping the server itself. Identify the ports they instances are using and try to connect using those particular ports first. If you can then you have a problem with the browser or seeing the browser. See if these help as well.

i have two named instances i can ping the server from the client they are in
the same domainbut there is a firewaal between the sql server and the rest of
the servers. the sql browser service is running
