Hi Andrew,
You definitely do not bother me. I am very glad to discuss this interesting
topic with you.
Actually the KB article also applies to SQL Server 2005. You can see the
"Apply to" section at the bottom of that article. Keep-alive package is
indeed a production at TCP layer, that means, only underlying network
driver can do it. SQL Server cannot directly invoke it. Though SQL Server
2005 provide fields for you to configure the interval, it may just send a
request to Windows OS. The real worker is actually Windows OS.
Anyway regarding your concerns, I will try to consult our product team to
see if they could share any insights. However since this process is not
guaranteed and this issue may need some advanced troubleshooting
technologies which can only be done at CSS. If I could not get an effective
response within two business days, I recommend that you contact Microsoft
Customer Support Services (CSS) via telephone so that a dedicated Support
Professional can assist you in a more efficient manner. Please be advised
that contacting phone support will be a charged call.
To obtain the phone numbers for specific technology request please take a
look at the web site listed below.

If you are outside the US please see http://support.microsoft.com for
regional support phone numbers.
Please feel free to let me know if you have any other questions or
concerns. Have a nice day!
Best regards,
Charles Wang
