Cannot connect via VPN to SQL 2005 instance using Browser service

Hi,
We are have a problem when trying to connect to a SQL-2005 instance
via VPN. The server is configured for remote access (both TCP/IP and
named pipes) and the Browser service appears to be running. If I try
to connect using just the instance name then I get an error that the
connection was refused by the remote machine. However, if I connect to
an instance name and supply the port then it all works. eg. MYSERVER/
SQL2005, 2379.
This, I think, indicates that the SQL Browser service is not working
correctly. The server in question is an active/active clustered setup,
with SQL-2005 on the first node and and SQL-2000 (SP 4) on the second.
Internally on the LAN I can connect no problem at all, it's only via
VPN that it fails. Of interest, the BOL indicate that you can
configure the Browser service via the SQL-Server Surface Area
Configuration tool, however I can not see the service when I use this
either on the cluster or on the node. However, the service is clearly
running if I look in Services or Confiuration Manager.
The SQL-Server 2005 has a fixed port number, however it is not the
standard number (1433).
I have queried the port (UDP 1434) using PortQry and it tells me that
it is configured as listening and filtered, however it does not return
any more information. I was expecting some instance information to be
returned. I stopped and re-started the Browser service, but it still
did not work.
Has anyone any ideas what to look at next ?
Thanks.
