Re: Unable to connect to SQLExpress Remotely - no matter what

If the connection makes it to SQL Server then there should be an error in
the SQL Server error log. If not, it's likely that either the firewall
isn't allowing connections to SQL Server or there's a login failure which
should show up in the Windows Security event log.

Roger,

The error text is as follows:

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.
When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the
fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote
connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error
Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1)

Enabling the browser, tcp/ip, etc. is all covered in the KB article
that I gave a link to.

This only happens on my laptop. I JUST installed yet another machine
and connected remotely the first try.

I think that something went wrong with sql express that even an
uninstall and reinstall does not correct.

Again, thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide.

Karl

Hi all,

I've been fighting to get sql server express on my machine to be
accessible remotely. I've tried many times and quadruple checked all
of the instructions in KB article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;914277

I have even performed a full uninstall and reinstall, then applied KB
914277 (once again).

I've turned off all firewalls and virus scan.

I've compared to other machines that work.

We've installed to other machines and followed KB 914277 and they've
worked.

Nothing helps. My Sql server express instance remains unavailable from
other machines.

Any ideas? I've spent a whole day on this and I'm frustrated as can
be! I need this machine to work as moving to another machine for my
work is not practical.

Thanks!

Karl
