RE: Connection Issue : SQL Server 2005 install on XPpro when connecting from a XPpro machine

Hello Daryl,

I think you are trying to mix the use of windows authentication and SQL authentication. With Windows authentication you don't specify a username it uses the user you are logged in as. For this to work you need to in a domain where the user on your machine is a domain user and then assign that user access on the server.

I have installed SQL Server 2005 (Developer Edition) as a default
instance onto a Windows XPpro (SP2) machine and I am trying to connect
to it from another Windows XPpro (SP2) machine using Microsoft's
DataLink connection tool. I have installed using Windows
Authentication only for the default instance of Server 2005.

The machine that has Server 2005 installed on is called JOSHUA and I
can
obtain the Server Name over the network but I am having difficulty
when I
attempt to get the Database name. The error message I get is "Login
failed
for user 'JOSHUA\Guest'." I have a login in the Security section of
the SQL
Server's instance JOSHUA\MyLoginName and I have added this to the
"Manage my
network passwords" area on the XP machine I am trying to connect from.
i.e.
Server: JOSHUA
User Name: JOSHUA\MyLoginName
Password: Password used on the machine with Server 2005 installed.
I have (I think) made the correct changes to the Surface Area
Connections and have added the correct services / ports to the
Exemptions list. But I am happy for someone to comment on these as
well, can anyone please help me?

thanks
daryl
