Connection to SQL Server 7 using MDAC 2.6

Hi All
I have a really nagging problem with an app we developed a while ago.
Whilst running the exe from a share in a small network with the SQL server
in the same network, using a simple switch the clients run fine and connect
to the server first time.
When the server is put behind a firewall, port 1433 opened and the exe now
on another server on a routed network, the connection times out first time
and then connects immediately the second time. We have the relevant DNS
setup in our DNS server and have added the details to the local host file.
We have even added the client using the client network utility.
Although it connects retrieving rows from the server is slow. When the
local exe file is copied to the local machine the problem disappears.
Does anyone know what causes this behaviour so we can modify the application
or setup.
Any help would be greatly welcomed.
Thanks
Phil
