HowTo: Force the use of a certain IP address for Server-to_Server communication

Hello.

We have two SQL Server 2000 (SP3a) servers, running replication.

Each machine has two network cards.

Up to just now only the first card in each machine was being used
(192.168.1.*), which put. each machine on our entire internal network.
Therefore communication betweeen these two servers was accomplished by going
out to the network, through the hubs, patch panels, etc.

To speed up the transfer of replicated data I asked the network guys to set
up the second card in each machine to be on their own network (192.168.6.*)
, and plug a cable from one machine directly into the other via these second
cards. This way a direct connection between these two servers exist.

I changed the "hosts" files on both servers and added the IP/Name pair of
the other server in each, hoping that this will force the issue of each
machine seeing the other over this new, "private" network.

I don't know of any place (nor can I find any place) in Enterprise Manager
that I can specify an IP address, therefore I think this is all that I need
to do. Perhaps I need to reboot the servers in order to "free" the IP
addresses currently in use (?).

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Mike
