Is this for a Named Instance installation, on a non-standard port?

If so, then it probably works fine on the active node, but the remote node
times out?

Create a client-side alias on each node; sometimes the port resolution does
not work properly.

Are you running the SQL Browser service on each node?

On one of our active nodes we cannot start the configuration manager but

can start management studio.

We get the error message "Connection to target machine cannot be made in a
timely fashion". Any ideas on what causes this and how to fix?
