Re: 3 node cluster with two SQL instances. Mixed SQL service pack?

Correct. Service packs are applied per instance. Having Virtual SQL
Instances at different service pack levels does not affect node hosting
ability.

So as long as I specified that my passive node could own both instances it
should be able to run both virtual servers since the service packs are
applied to the virtual server not to the node, correct?

Russ is correct.

Please note that all shared resources (tools, MDAC, etc.) will be at the
highest service pack level regardless of install or update order.

We have a 2 node active/passive cluster running SQL2K SP4. I want to
add
another node and make it Active/Active/Passive with the one active
node
running the default SQL instance and the other Active running a named
instance with the passive node taking over for both instances in a
failover
scenario. One of the instances needs to be SP3a(vendor requirement)
and
the
other SP4. Is this possible? Or would it make more sense to create
another
active/passive cluster and buy two new servers?

You can have multiple instances in a cluster at different service pack
levels.
