Re: Unable to install SQL 2000 sp4 on Windows 2003 Cluster

It sounds like the SP install is starting normally. It drops the resources
offline to update the binaries, then it brings them back online to update
the database internals via scripts. The .iss file is the installshield
driver file and is normal. I am surprised that there is no error log on the
remote server. That means the install never even started over there.
Here is a somewhat generic checklist:
Make sure the task scheduleer service is running on the remote node.
Make sure the install account is a domain account with local admin
membership on both servers.
If you are using AWE memory, reduce the memory footprint <2GB to decrease
startup time. Set it back when you are done.
If this doesn't work, you might think about investing into a call to CSS.

Just checked and I don't have any log files on the remote server on April
13th!
I just ran the SP4 setup again from my main server (cfsa9aaf) and when it
gets to the part about doing the Cluster operations, I went to my remote
server (cfsa9aae) to see what files it created in c:\windows...
The ONLY file it created was a file called CFSA9AAE_MSSQLSERVER.ISS & this
disappeared the moment the error message appeared on the main server.
There
is definitely no log file created on my remote server.
However, clustering is working as I can failover all groups no problem. I
can map network drives between both servers ok as well.
One last thing, not sure if this is of any use but when the error message
appears and I go into Cluster Administrator, I have 3 resources all
offline
(they were all online when I started the SP4 install). They are SQL
Server,
SQL Server Agent & SQL Server Fulltext.
I have also tried running the SP4 setup from the other server (cfsa9aae) &
I
get exactly the same result. The same error message, 3 offline cluster
resources & no log file on the remote server (it did create the ISS file
though).
Many thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide.

Thanks Geoff for replying. I am back in work on Sunday. I shall post the
log
file from the remote server then.

You need to look at the setup log on the remote node to find why it
failed.
This error log only reported that the remote node failed to upgrade.
It had
no further information.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that the servers are currently at SP3.
Thanks

I have entered the name of my virtual server, have then stated the

the user that is a member of the administrators group on both nodes

I
get the 'Setup is performing required operations on cluster nodes.

2 or 3 minutes later the setup fails with the following error
