It's not a cluster issue. This happens on standalone servers. It all has
to do with versioning. Software installs can and do put down older versions
of drivers or components which are not patched. Hardware does the same with
drivers. After installing or uninstalling hardware or software to a system,
you should always reapply service packs and hot fixes to ensure that
everything is at the correct patch level. Doesn't matter if it is a cluster
or not.

"Warning If you ignore any of the following rules, you will need to
reinstall Microsoft Cluster Service.
·If you change or add new software or hardware components to your
system after you install SQL Server Service Pack 3, you must reinstall
Service Pack 3 or your current Windows NT service pack again."
My eyes almost popped out when I saw this. Can this be right, I am
reading this right? This KB article does not cover Windows 2003 and SQL
SP4, does this KB apply to this platform?
T
his issue came up during a production incident were after we
uninstalled Symantec Norton Antivirus (SAV) our SQL Server Replication
broke. We started getting DCOM errors because the ATL71.dll had been
removed from the cluster nodes. We took a shot in the dark and
reapplied the SP4 and it fixed it. During a postmortem, I came across
this section in the KB. An article that t I have read many times before
but the importance of the above quote had never register in my mind.
