Let me backtrack a little. When I said that the install went well, I should
have said that the unpacking of the install files went well :) I know, dumb...
Anyway, when I actually did try the service pack install it asked me to
supply the name of the virtual server but it would not take the name. Our
server virtual name is ncm-sql. We have two instances of sql running so I
tried the names of one of the sql instances, in this case it was sqlncm and
it accepted it. I was wondering why.
I believe the answer is that the instructions mean "virtual sql server" not
virtual cluster server" even though they say "virtual server".
The rest of the install went fine and then I moved the two cluster groups to
the second node and rebooted the first node. At this time several of the sql
cluster resources started to fail. Of course, I panicked. But I just waited
for the first node to come back up and then I moved the groups back to the
first node and now they are working find.
However, when I search for the ssnetlib.dll file to check the version, the
folder that reflects the instance that I used to apply the service pack shows
version 2000.80.766.0 which implies sp3a. But the version for the instance
that I didn't upgrade still shows 2000.80.534.0. I am guessing that I need to
re-apply the service pack but when it asks for the virtual server name, I
should use the name of the second instance?
