    Hello !

I have installed an active/passive MSSQL 2000 Cluster on W2K3 EE and
applied successfully SP3a to both nodes (Failover to second node still
    works at this time !)

Before going to test phase, I would like to patch the SQL Server with
    Ms03-031 cummulative patch.
Wenn applying the patch from active node (NodeA), it says it has
successfully installed and after verifying the file version for
SQLSERVR.EXE it is really 2000.80.818.00 on both NodeA and NodeB (That
should mean that patch IS correctly installed).

But when I initiate a "move group" in Cluster Admin, the SQL Server
resource hangs on "Online Pending" to NodeB for a few minutes (SQL
Service Manager hangs on "Starting...") and then switches back
    automatically to NodeA.

In Event Log I when obtain the following errors:

    ------------------------------------------------------------
    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: MSSQLSERVER
    Event Category: (3)
    Event ID: 17052

    Description:

    and

    Event Category: (3)

    Computer:
    Description:
[sqsrvres] OnlineThread: Error 5b4 bringing resource online.
    ------------------------------------------------------------

NET MSGHELP 1460 answers: "This operation returned because the timeout
    period expired."

I'm now searching for two days and have tried many things, inclusive
backup/restore, manual uninstall of sql and finally image restore to
have the status from before patching, but nobody could tell me what
    can be the issue...

    Hope you can help me!

    Thanks.
    Cédric
