In the end, re-imaging the PC may be a quicker solution in your case. But I
still believe that if you scour your fileysystem and registry to delete
everything that has anything to do with SQL Server, you should be able to
then get a fresh install done.

If you see your SQL Server 2000 installation there, try deleting it.

Note:
SQL Server 2000 Setup is really bad. If you lose the log file of the Setup
then you are in the soup. I really dislike it... SQL Server 2005' s Setup is
really good and it seems SQL Server 2008' s is much better.
