Will you try Windows Install Cleanup Utility?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
If you see your SQL Server 2000 installation there, try deleting it.
Note:
SQL Server 2000 Setup is really bad. If you lose the log file of the Setup then you are in the soup. I really dislike it... SQL Server 2005' s Setup is really good and it seems SQL Server 2008' s is much better.

I tried this but cannot really seem to get off the ground. As near as I can
tell, my computer does not seem to "think' it has Enterprise manager
installed. The KB article recommends deleting the install directory in the
Program Files, but that directory does not even exist for me. So, I am
guessing something is quite wrong, given that it shows in my
Start->Programs-Menu, but is not actually installed.
I am totally in trouble, as I have to get sql server reinstalled, but the
install fails every time (it "acts" like it installs, and then simply "ends")
with no notice, and no error.
