Thanks for your reply and clarifying.

Now, my understanding of your situation is: the Workstation (I suspect it
is Windows XP Pro SP2.) installed SQL 2005 express , SQL 2000 client
tools
and SQL 2005 client tools. You are unable to register any SQL 2000 server
in SQL 2005 Mgt Studio. Please feel free to correct me.

For such situation, as I said in my previous reply, SQL 2000 can be
registred in SQL 2005 Mgt Studio. For troubleshooting reasons, I have
following suggestions:

1. Check if you can register those remote SQL 2000 server in SQL 2000
Enterprise Management?
2. You are unable to register all remote SQL 2000 server or some of them?
3. Try telnet "servername or IP" 1433 & telnet "servername or IP" 1434
to
check if the ports are opened.
4. Please let me know the exact symptom when you try to register the
remote
sql 2000 server in SQL 2005 Mgt Studio.For example: Is there any error
message? When you browse the remote server, can you see any SQL server?

Please tell me the result of this issue at your earliest convenience. If
there is anything unclear, please don't hesitate to let me know. I'm
looking forward to your reply.

My WS has the SQL 2005 Express - default install using Local Service
account.
These are managed WS's and I do NOT have a "local" admin account. I
am
granted Admin access using a domain account that has forced password
changes
periodically. Guess I could live with that.

The SQL 2000 Servers are on W2K3 Servers. I support a number of them.

Ideally I want both SQL 2000 client tools/books online AND SQL 2005
client
tools/books online on my WS. If I was forced to use just the SQL 2005
client
tools/books online I would want to register the SQL 2000 servers I
support.

I'm just assuming that SQL 2005 Management Console is the replacement
tool
for SQL 2000 Enterprise Manager.

experience, this is because by default the SQL 2005 Express Edition
installs the SQL Browser service and runs it under the NetworkService
account which has limited permissions in the registry. This account
does
not have permissions to the registry hive where there port
information
is
for the SQL 2000 instances. My suggestion is: change the startup
account
for the SQL Browser service to something that has permissions to
access
the
area of the registry where the information is stored. You can use
'Local
System', a domain account that is a local administrator, or the same
account that is starting the SQL 2000 instance(s). Once you change
the
startup account stop and restart the service. Using PortQryUI you
should
see that it returns the information for the SQL 2000 named instances
as
well.

Everytime I opted NOT to upgrade, it says my system software is
current.

I'll try again on another similar PC configuration.
