Thanks for posting.

My understanding of your issue is you cannot connect to named instance of
SQL 2000 in SQL 2005 Mgt Studio.

It is possible to run two instances of SQL Server (even a mixture of 2000
and 2005) on the same server. This install is supported as long as the
Windows and Hardware requirements in Books Online are met. However, I know
that SQL 2005 Express doesn't obtain a Management stuido, so I'd like to
know from where , you try to register the SQL 2000 instance?

For your scenario, I noticed that you have installed SQL 2005 Express.
Let's perform a test, use a tool query to port 1434 using such as PortQryUI
(see link below). Are you only able to the SQL 2005 instance? Based on my
experience, this is because by default the SQL 2005 Express Edition
installs the SQL Browser service and runs it under the NetworkService
account which has limited permissions in the registry. This account does
not have permissions to the registry hive where there port information is
for the SQL 2000 instances. My suggestion is: change the startup account
for the SQL Browser service to something that has permissions to access the
area of the registry where the information is stored. You can use 'Local
System', a domain account that is a local administrator, or the same
account that is starting the SQL 2000 instance(s). Once you change the
startup account stop and restart the service. Using PortQryUI you should
see that it returns the information for the SQL 2000 named instances as
well.

Everytime I opted NOT to upgrade, it says my system software is current.

I'll try again on another similar PC configuration.
