    I always ask for an explanation of the checkpoint process, lazy writer, and
    read-ahead.

    I also probe for the potential DBA's communication skills. DBAs talk to
    business people more often than most other IT professionals. So it's very
    important that the candidate can communicate well with non-IT people using
    non-technical jargon.
