I'm with Ginny. Of course, remember than when you're so connected the exterior of the device has a 220 volt charge applied that prevents you from disconnecting and walking away with it... ;)

Tom,
You can indeed open your dsktop SQL Server from your mobile device when the device is cradled.

"Tom Holmes Jr." <tom@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote in message news:O24xWck1HHA.4476@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxLOL .... I know exactly what you mean ... connections go in and out depending on where you are.
I mean .... it might be interesting if I could open to my SQL Server 2005 on the desktop from the PDA,
IF AND ONLY IF my PDA is in the cradle! Not over a wireless LAN.
I mean, if I can .... then there's no reason I can't do my sync that way?????? I already found VB.NET code on the Net to detect when the PDA is in the cradle.
Thanks!

"William Vaughn" <billvaNoSPAM@xxxxxxxxx> wrote in message news:eG00sOh1HHA.5740@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxIs the Mobil application on a LAN? Don't say "Sure... it's a wireless link" 'cause that makes my tummy hurt and means you're in for problems. We use sync etc. because the wireless links are not stable enough when using a mobile device to open and use a LAN connection.

"Tom Holmes Jr." <tom@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote in message news:%23TGEQpg1HHA.484@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxI agree. I can't wait for the Sync Services to come out. Not sure if I can use the beta now since I need to have working code for clients soon.
Just a quick thought .... and maybe this is the wrong place to ask it .... but can the Mobile Application open to the SQL Server or Access while it is synced?
It's something I want to try out tonight.
Thanks again!

I agree with this, although I've always used a custom sync solution since not all my customers have the infrastructure for merge replication. With SSC 3.1 I just copy the sdf file back and forth and work with it on the desktop. But Sync Services seems well thought out and a better long term solution.

I do know of a lot of very large companies (and a lot more small ones) using IIS and SQL Server on the same box. If I were you I would work toward a Sync Services solution anyway. A few months more and it will be released. From what I've seen the betas are pretty stable in this regard.

"Tom Holmes Jr." <tom@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote in message news:uwdHcQe1HHA.5980@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxHey William, or Bill, I'm just waiting for that Sync Services to come out. The end of the year is going to be too long of a wait, and I need some sort of Sync solution soon.
So, I'm looking at the PrimeWorks Data Port Sync, or SQLServerCE software to come out. Thankfully it makes a direct connection to the SDF file from the desktop.
Or, I may have to code something myself in the meantime ...
But, honestly .. has no one else raised a concern that IIS has to be on the same evironment as SQL? Has no one else raised a concern when it comes to security and security holes???
I certainly don't mean to go off on you or Ginny, you both have been extremely helpful ... my anger and resentment is for Microsoft and the monumentally stupid things they have
done over the years. That is why I do VB.NET stuff on the side, and my day job has been Java/J2EE coding in a Linux/Unix environment for the past 10 years. The companies
that I have worked for have really embraced open-source solutions over proprietary ones ... and no one I know has regretted making those decisions.
Anyway, I've got a couple of books of yours from back in the day regarding VB and/or SQL Programming.
Thanks again to you and Ginny for all the help.

"Tom Holmes Jr." <tom@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote in message news:uHaw5$L1HHA.4816@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxThanks for the information Ginny. I did download the BOL a while, but never dug down into it until now .... and what I read was disturbing:
"If this is the first publication created for this server, the Publication Wizard prompts you to configure the default snapshot folder location. The snapshot folder holds the snapshot files that contain the schema and data for published tables. The IIS user must be able to read these snapshot files so that it can download the files to the smart device."
Is microsoft kidding me .... is this just the IIS USER????????????????? Or does it appear that I need IIS Services (such as FTP) running????????????????????????
Microsoft has got to be kidding me??????????????????????? As I've stated before, and I think the entire World would agree with me ... IIS is the biggest piece of garbage MS ever produced.
It's riddled with security holes and it is not to be trust at all ... even with Anti-Virus software and firewalls. My clients are not computer-saavy, they are local town or county government workers, and they don't have technical people on staff. They are NOT going to be running IIS and we don't want them to. What if IIS goes down? How would they know? How are they gonna bring it back up without calling me to BLAME ME that stuff isn't working now.
It was my deepest hope that Merge/Replication between SQL Compact Edition and SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition would have it's own sync services NOT dependent on IIS.
I'm sorry about the rant .... but is IIS really needed .... or can it be avoided? Thanks!
Tom

The best reference on merge replication for SQL Compact is the SQL 2005 Compact Books Online. There is also some good info here: http://www.microsoft.com/sql/editions/compact/default.mspx
You can use merge replication with SQL Server on your main desktop serving as the publisher with SQL Compact on PPC, TabletPC, or other desktops as subscribers, so that would probably be the easiest solution for you. You might also want to look at Sync Services for ADO.Net, currently in beta: http://blogs.msdn.com/stevelasker/archive/2007/03/18/QAforOCS_2D00_SyncServicesForAdoNet.aspx

"Tom Holmes Jr." <tom@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote in message news:elBuyaT0HHA.5408@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxI will be developing some apps on a PPC with WM 5.0 and will have the Compact Edition.
Similiarly, my client my have tablet PC's with either Compact Edition, or Access, or SQL Server Express on it.
The main desktop will have the full blown SQL Server, probably 2005 or 2007 version.
I presume that I can use Merge/Replication for the sync merging. As I have looked on here, with Compact Edition and the full SQL Server you can do Merge/Replication. Where is the best place to read up on merging/sync replication?
There are 3 scenarios I see, and the first two the most common:
1) there will be some tables for download only ... for lookups
2) Data will be uploaded from the PPC to the SQL Server, AND THEN I want those records on the PDA to be expunged and deleted.
3) One table ... eventually may have to be really synced with both records in SQL Server AND on the PDA.
Also ... what is the best way to do merge replication for the Tablet PC. Should I use Compact Edition there also, SQL Server Express, or Access. So long as they can do Merge/Replication to the main SQL Server, that's great.
Thanks for any help!
Tom
