Problem solved. I guess I was not thinking when I posed the question
although I expected the support from SQL Express.
I'd forgotten the workstation components are a separate install and
operate independently of the server. So I uninstalled the SQL Express
workstation components and installed the ones from SQL Server 2005. Works
like a champ now and functions as advertised.

Wesley,
I don't think it's so much a flaw as a design decision that may have
changed since SQL Express was released. I think the version of SSMS that
ships with SQL Express sp2 will support SQL CE (at least I hope so) but I
haven't seen any official word on that. In the meantime, if you need to
work with SQL CE databases, I'd consider that sufficient reason to
install SQL Server - in fact I have both SQL Server and SQL Express
installed on my development machine.

Hmmm...
Seems to be a flaw then in the ability to use the tool. I did a quick
look at the contents of the CD and don't see it evident. I have no
reason to install SQL server on my laptop with SQL Express already
installed.
I guess my next step is to see if I can only install the SSMS component
from the CD.

Wesley,
SSMS gets installed along with SQL 2005, so I never used it as a
separate download. Somebody on the sqlserver newsgroup might be able to
tell you how to do it, but I'm guessing that you have to intall SQL
2005.

That would explain it. Is the full version of SSMS available as a
separate download, extractable from the SQL 2005 CD or otherwise
obtainable?
I did notice that stored procedures were not supported, so I'll have
to work around that; I'll review the limitations before proceeding.
Thanks for the info.

Wesley,
Are you using the version of SSMS that comes with SQL Express?
Currently SQL Mobile isn't supported. You can edit queries in Visual
Studio 2005 but you can't "add querires to the database file" since
SQL Mobile doesn't support stored procedures.

I'm trying to build a SQL Mobile application and creation of the
.sdf file is becoming a challenge. The Microsoft documentation shows
creation of the database file in SMSS. The picture shows an option
for a database file of type "SQL Server Mobile."
The version of SMSS I have has the Server Type grayed out. I have to
build the database in Visual Studio with limited ability to manage
it.
Did I miss something? Is there additional support that needs to be
installed to enable the build of ".sdf" files? How can I even edit
or add queries to database file?
I was at least expecting the same type of functionality and support
from SQL mobile as I do with SQL 2005.
