SMS query on applications

I am trying to run queries that will report on specific applications. My
problem is that SMS reports every version that was ever on the machine.
Running a query for a software package will show duplicates entries (one for
each version of the software) If a run a query for machines running a
specific older version of a software package...I will get bogus information
--meaning that the older version has already been upgraded.

With all the security patches that have come out, I need to have a reliable
way to identify software package versions.
