Thanks for the reply.

Information is definitely in the site database about the
patch status of the machines - the additional web
reporting tools are telling me that. The date the HW
inventory was reported is shown as after the scan tool
ran, and the scan tool ran successfully.

There's another thread with identical title which I posted
accidentally - tried originally to post via Outlook
Express but it gave me an error so I posted online, but
the Outlook post turned out to have succeeded! Rather than
try and keep both threads going I suggest we both move
across to the other thread, should you have any more
suggestions.
