Having clients stall/hang during software install

Hi..! I was wondering, is there a way to have SMS halt a computer,
lock the keyboard/mouse etc. during software install? Would solve a
lot of my problems over here if there was an addin or something which
would be able to do that!
I have a lot of packages, and a lot of packages are updates/upgrades.
I usually run them "when no user is logged on", ergo, when the
computer is rebooted, the program runs. However; some larger
applications require an uninstall before the installation of the new
version. It's kinda hard to perform a silent uninstall when the user
is running the program. So, is there a way to have SMS lock the
workstation preventing users from:
* logging on during an upgrade, OR
* starting programs during an install.
I know WOL would be a good solution to this, BUT, we have a lot of
mobile users, which means a lot of laptops. These guys come in once in
a while, so WOL isn't a good solution for them..
Anyone around here know if something like that exists? TIA!
.
