Just copy your sources using dfsr.
Then build sms packages where you specify that the package doesn't have source files
Then add a program that references your dfs root like \\dfsroot\softwdistshare\setup.exe
I could probably turn these little 3 lines into a 15 page white paper if you want, but that's all it takes.

Hi guys, I am designing the DFSR for a new project with each remote site have
a DFS file server and an SMS 2003 server. I thought perhaps naively that I
could have distributed all the source packages through DFSR but someone
mentioned that SMS will then copy or create its own distribution package. I
don't understand the point of that in my opinion. Does anyone have any
thoughts, advice or links that can show me how DFSR can be used and
intergrated with SMS 2003
Thanks
TC
