Yes, you will need to use WINS and have a SLP setup until AD is extended.

Hello,
we are planning the installation of an SCCM Primary Site on a Windows 2000
Domain. We are not going to use advanced features like NAP and we don't
require mative mode for the time being. Therefore we could survive without
extending the schema.
However the domain will be eventually migrated to Windows 2008 at some point
next year and by that time we would like to take advantage of the full set of
functionalities provided by SCCM.
Is there any major drawbacks in extending the schema after SCCM has been
completely deployed and all clients already installed?
