Sync'ing with an upstream server does only work for child sites ("child-SUP" synchronizes with "parent-SUP").
The only way to "sync" something is http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb680473.aspx "How to Synchronize Updates Using Export and Import"

We have a fully working SCCM server (mixed mode) and a remote SUP on a
different server. Both servers don't have internet access.
In a DMZ we have a stand alone WSUS server which is connected to the
internet and all patches are downloaded.
The SCCM and SUP server have access to the WSUS server only on port 80.
If we configure the SUP to use an upstream server, how does SCCM and/or the
SUP know wich upstream server to use. I can't configure this within SCCM,
only in the WSUS console and this doesn't work. No synchronization between
the SUP and the upstream server.
