Thanks for your resonse.
I've since tried a new route of uninstalling sccm and installing it again
fresh. This time I pointed sccm to create a new db on our cluster during the
install. At the "site creation and initialization step" it stops with an
error of not being able to create the sql tables. The logfile shows a
stoppage at the script creating sp_lu_category.
I had found that below blog from msdn earlier. I was interested in trying
the setspn command. However, I have not yet been able to get it to work. when
I run the command I get an account not found error. I can run a setspn -l
when using a specific server name, but not when using virtual ip for sql. I
don't know if that makes any difference. But I don't have experience w/
setspn or clustering so I'm just trying different things.

I recently had a working installation of SCCM with a local database. We
wanted to move our database to our SQL cluster. The data was moved and the
SCCM setup was run successfully to modify the database location to the new
cluster address. However, now when trying to open Configuration Manager
console it just hangs on "connecting". It looks like it is trying to connect
to the local database still, but when I point Config Manager to the new
virtual cluster IP address I get an error: "The Site Server cannot be
contacted or trying to connect to an incompatible Site Server version."
Details say "Invalid namespace".
