Swap dead machine, now have 2 entries

I manage around 650 computers running XP and managed by a 2003 server
cluster. I have set up SMS 2003 over the past couple years, and we
have been using its software inventory functionality to keep track of
the users who log in to the machines. However, we have a couple
situations that are causing problems for us.
We use a standard naming convention for each PC based on the room
number, paired with the number of machines in the room.
1. We reimaged all of our machines each year, and we need to make sure
we don't lose the inventory data. I think SMS 2003 does this on its
own, so we have this issue worked out.
2. When a machine fails, we put a new sysprepped machine in its
place. SMS sees this new machine as a new entity, and gives it a
unique GUID. I need some help combining the inventory data for the
original machine and merge it into the inventory data held for the new
machine.
3. In a similiar situation, we are upgrading about 50 machines to
brand new dell boxes. I need to find a way to combine the data, just
like I have requested in the previous question.
I understand SCCM 07 is coming out soon, but we probably won't be
moving to that until mid summer.
If anybody has any ideas, I would really appreciate it.
