Re: How to install SMS Admin console on Vista

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

I use the sp3 service pack to install the sms console on normal xp machines.
even with out a previous instance of the sms console. if sp3 console is
compatable i don't see why you can just run sp3 and choose the console option
during install. Since we don't use vista i cannot verify that it will act
the same.

Exactly. We are more concerned with how to get the SP3 client. Don't have the
disk either. Thanks for any help.

I don't have the SMS SP3 version on a disk, I upgraded from SMS 2003 SP2 with
the SP3 Service Pack. Does the SMS SP2 install work on Vista? Thanks!

I managed to make it work. Here are the steps
• Install the SMS 2003 SP3 console on your Vista PC.
• Check the DCOM (run dcomcnfg) and you may have to enable it.
• Under the Windows Firewall, allow WMI.
• Under the Windows Firewall , Add the program
“C:\Windows\System32\wbem\unsecapp.exe”
• Under the Windows Firewall, open port TCP 135 to the firewall
• reboot

My understanding was that the SP3 file was just for the server. I tried
running it on my workstation, and received the same errors you did, "not
enough space".

"Bob" wrote:

If you installed it from the SP2 CD, I think you can run the SP3 upgrade on
the local machine and it may work for you.Let me know if it does and I'll do
the same!

I decided to just turn off the firewall on my Vista workstation, but I still
do not see any collections, etc within the SMS console.

Good question Bob, I am wondering the same. I have Vista and the SMS 2003 SP2
CD, but when I run the CD, it says the CD is not compatible with Vista. I
still go through with the install, and can open the console but nothing shows
up under the catergories. How do I do the WMI? Anyone have the exact
procedure?

My understanding is that SMS 2003 Admin console must be SP3 to install on
Vista. I updated my SP2 SMS 2003 to SP3, and want to install the console,
which was never installed before, onto my Vista workstation. I just don't
know where to find the installation file. I received an error saying there
wasn't enough disk space during the run of the SP2 SMS installation, although
I have over 9 GB on my drive available. I never got to the screen that offers
the option to install SMS Admin console only before the error message.
Firewall would not be a problem, it is off. Workstation and server are in the
same subnet. Thanks!

Hello Bob,

What problems are you experiencing ?
You need to enable the exception in the firewall for WMI if you are having
problems expanding your folders and site systems.
