You are correct - the parent (or child) should NOT be a component server of that site. I guess you have to look under the site system "folder" in the SMS Admin Console on SMS01 and check if SMS02 is somehow defined there (it shouldn't be).

Ok, stupid question as I have not experienced this before. SMS01 is a
primary server and SMS02 is the Primary Parent. Both use the same SMS
account for all security settings.
SMS01 tries to make SMS02 a Site System (Component Server), but status
messages for Site_Component_Manager show an Access Denied error when trying
to make SMS02 a Site System.
Is it expected (by design) that the parent server becomes a component server
of the child site? I don't seem to have ever run into this before.
Logically it does not see to fit, Central Site should not become a component
server for my child site... I will have 27 child sites, they won't all make
the Central Site a component Server, will they?
