We have several DP's located on NetApp filers, and it works with the quite obvious exception that they can't host a BITS enabled DP. And as you mention - you most likely must use it as an server share in SMS (at least that's how we have configured them).
I remember having some issues related to the use of NetApp filers when upgrading from SMS 2.0. If I remember correctly we had to create a dummy admin$ share on them for SMS distribution manager to be able to copy the files to them.

Quick question - can a DP reside on a network appliance filer? From
what I see, we can just use the Server Share for the DP.
