After reading through some of the logs, it was very obvious that I
overlooked a database connection problem with the remote SQL server. I'm
not
sure what happened to the connection after the installation. The log file
from the installation looked ok.

That would explain a lot!

I decided to install a SQL Standard server on the same box as the SMS
2003.
Once I did this, the system management folder in Active Directory now is
being updated.

Excellent!

Thanks for your help!

Any time, glad we got to the bottom of this issue. ST

Hi Kevin,

Now I am puzzled... however, it appears you (may) have more serious
issues.
Perhaps the reason your site server SMS1 could not publish has exposed
this
difficulty.

I see in the log file some errors like this "Attempting to connect to
install drive '\\PCXP\V$\'. The PCxp is my sql database remote server,
but
are all these references to the V$ drive?

In your logs, notice that SMS1 does connect to \\PCXP\admin$ that appears
OK. Then it enumerates the drives looking for the largest NTFS drive --
that's normal for an SMS site, or DP installation but not for simply
accessing your SQL Server. In the log that you sent, you can see where
SMS
will enumerate each drive letter...

Couple of questions for you:
1) can you tell me what operating systems you have installed here, and
what
versions of software (SMS and SQL Server) -- be sure to include the
service
pack info.

2) can you verify that your SMS site is communicating with the SQL Server
sms database?

Steve
