I am looking at System Management Systems and I need someone that knows
more
about SMS to answer some questions for me.
Basically, I have around 170 desktops spread accross 8 sites, all with
T1s.
Most sites DO NOT have a server locally, some do. My central location
houses
my domain controllers, etc, if the site has a server, it is also a domain
controller. I already have sites and subnets defined in Active Directory.
What I need to do, is the following:
1. Deploy small applications to desktops, .
2. Software and hardware inventory of all workstations.
3. I have a app that writes a registry key that is the same on all
workstations, I would like to be able to "montor" what workstation has
what
values.
4. Deploy other apps, as needed, some larger than others during closed
hours only etc.
5. Also grab IP address's of all workstations (as they are static on our
network), so that We have a database of what workstaiton, where is it,
what
user logs into it, what value is that registry key,...
Comments? Suggestions.
From a design (and security) perspective, I really don't like installing SMSsite systems on domain controllers. Here is something to be aware:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886213/en-us
Also, I don't like to see clients at the end of a WAN without a local
protected distribution point and/or secondary site server to provide those
updates. Even with a T1 connection, large updates to even 10 clients can
easily saturate the WAN (ask me how I know :).
