Re: IIS Required on Site Server for BITS-enabled DPs? MS says this

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hey Michel,

I had the same question & came back here to revisit the post. MS-logic leads
me to believe that yes, BITS Extensions are required on both the site server
& any bit-enabled DPs. I am just now wiping my lab for a final run-through &
will not install the BITS extensions on the site server (but it'll have
IIS), will post the definitive answer next week (like Thurs of Fri).

Yes, you need iis on your site server, otherwise you get the error below.
Straigth from Cathy's Fine Faq:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sms/sms2003/techfaq/tfaq02.mspx#E1DAC

Where is the document that states that IIS on your site server is a
no-no?

Table 1 Site System Requirements

Distribution point
To use the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS), the site
server and distribution point must have Microsoft Internet Information
Services (IIS) installed and enabled. You must also enable WebDAV
extensions
for IIS for Windows Server 2003. IIS is not required if the distribution
point will not be BITS-enabled.

Hello Mark

No, you don't need BITS on your site server. But your Management Point
needs
BITS. And most admins leave their MP on the Site Server.

SMS Component Requires...

Management Point IIS and BITS
Reporting Point IIS and ASP
Dstribution Point IIS, WebDAV and BITS
(recommended)

Hope it helps,

Greetings All,

I've got a Central/Primary site & a Secondary site. I had a single
BITS-enabled DP at the primary site on
a 2nd server, & a BITS-enabled DP on the Secondary site server.
Yesterday
when I
went to distruibute my first package (Office 2003) I got an error in
Component Status on the Primary site:

Type: Milestone
Severity: Error
Message ID: 2344
Component: SMS_DISTRIBUTION_MANAGER
Failed to create virtual directory on the defined share or volume on
distribution point
"["Display=\\HQSSMS02\"]MSWNET:["SMS_SITE=HQS"]\\HQSSMS02\".

Possible cause: Distribution Manager requires that IIS base components
be
installed on the local SMS Site Server in order to create the virtual
directory. Distribution Manager also requires that IIS Web Services
be
installed on the Distribution Point Server that needs to support
Background
Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS).
Solution: Verify that IIS base components are installed on the local
SMS
Site Server, and IIS Web Services are installed on the Distribution
Point
Server.
==== END ====

I didn't get any errors/issues with the Secondary site/DP, as these
roles
are on the same box, & IIS & BITS extentions are installed.

When I disabled BITS on the site system HQSSMS02's Site Sytems
Properties
the package source replicated to the DP. Here's the million dollar
question
(really a clarification)... ONE MUST HAVE IIS INSTALLED ON THE SITE
SERVER
to take advantage of BITS-enabled DPs? This is a contradiction to
Microsoft's recommendation to NOT have IIS installed on the Primary
site
server (& SQL server) as it possesses a security risk, which presents
a
vulnerability on the site controll file.

Any comments or thoughts on this?

Cheers,
Mark
