Problems installing SMS 2003 SP2

The install went fine, until updating the ITMU (server and ITMU were at
SP1). I tried several times to install, even manually downloading the WSUS
file, but, the install kept failing at the "synching" point with a
0x0000000B error. I finally found a message in Google that advised to
"uninstall the SP1 ITMU, reboot, then install the SP2 ITMU". I tried that,
and, it failed the first time with a 0x00000034 error, but, then worked. I
then rebooted, and sent out the new client to all workstations.
My questions:
1. If this is normally required, can the documentation be updated to
reflect this?
2. If this is not normally required, could the problem be fixed?
